Ladbrokes CF Orr Stakes an Option for Abbey Marie

February 8th, 2017

Trainer Mick Kent has revealed that Abbey Marie remains a live chance of taking her position in the 2017 Ladbrokes CF Orr Stakes field first-up at Caulfield on Saturday.

Yet to taste anything but success through a short but impressive racing career so far, Abbey Marie has not been seen on track competitively since storming home to record a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville in early May.

Having entered Abbey Marie in 2017 Ladbrokes CF Orr Stakes nominations, as well as those for the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) on the same Caulfield card, Kent concedes that both races are short of the mare’s best distance, but told AAP her run will allow a good base for which to build her Autumn Carnival campaign.

“I would have trialled her but she’s running Saturday and I thought it was a bit too close to trial her and then run her,” Kent said.

“Both races are too short for her and the Orr looks particularly strong this year so we could quite easily see her in the mares’ race.

“She’s entered in all the races in Sydney and she could go to the Peter Young and the Australian Cup and then to the BMW.

“Or there’s also the Mannerism and the Coolmore but at this stage there’s no aim.

“We’ll see how she’s going and make a decision.

“She needs to have a day out as she’s been a long time off the scene.”

Abbey Marie stamped herself as a filly to follow when debuting for a smart win in the Cove Hotel Maiden Plate (1300m) on March 23rd and repeated the effort in the JRA BM70 (14400m) on April 23rd, in what was her only other start prior to the Australasian Oaks.

Having missed the spring after succumbing to a mystery virus, Kent said that Abbey Marie is fighting fit ahead of the 2017 Autumn Carnival.

“I was always behind during the spring,” he said.

“We had three sets of trials here at Cranbourne cancelled so we decided to pull up stumps.

“She had only three weeks off after being crook in hospital but we got her over that and I was happy to train her then stop her.

“She’s come back much happier now, fitter and healthier.”

The 2017 Ladbrokes CF Orr Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday (February 8th).
